This book surveys the state of the art in theoretical and computer modeling for biological sciences. Using both mathematical and stochastic computer models of biological systems, the author focuses in particular on three central topics: the origin of life, the immune system, and memory in the brain. Throughout the book, the author emphasizes how the power of modern computers is allowing researchers in theoretical biology to break free of the constraints on modeling that were imposed by the traditional differential equation approach.

Unique in its emphasis on modeling and computer simulation, Theoretical Models in Biology: The Origin of Life, the Immune System, and the Brain will be welcomed by students and researchers of mathematical biology.

Artificial Chemistries

Wolfgang Banzhaf, Lidia Yamamoto

The MIT Press, 2015

The field of Artificial life (ALife) is now firmly established in the scientific world, but it has yet to achieve one of its original goals: an understanding of the emergence of life on Earth. The new field of artificial chemistries draws from chemistry, biology, computer science, mathematics, and other disciplines to…

Introduction to Population Biology

Dick Neal

Cambridge University Press, 2004

How do plant and animal populations change genetically to evolve and adapt to their local environments? How do populations grow and interact with one another through competition and predation? How does behaviour influence ecology and evolution? Introduction to Population Biology covers all these areas and more. Taking…

Astronomical Origins of Life - Steps Towards Panspermia

Fred Hoyle, N. C. Wickramasinghe

Springer, 1999

Two of the pioneers of the modern version of panspermia - the theory that comets disperse microbial life throughout the cosmos - trace the development of their ideas through a sequence of key papers. A logical progression of thought is shown to lead up to the currently accepted viewpoint that at least the biochemical…

The Origin and Early Evolution of Life

Tom Fenchel

Oxford University Press, USA, 2003

Origin and Early Evolution of Life draws on evidence from molecular genetics, the structure and function of extant organisms, and geology. It covers the period from about 4 billion years ago, when life is thought to have originated, to about 600 million years ago when multicellular organisms first arose. There are…

Las Fuentes De La Vida

Isaac Asimov

Editorial Limusa S.A. De C.V., 2002

This is the middle of a set of three biochemistry books Asimov wrote in the 1950’s and 1960’s which form a progressive examination of the field. The Wellsprings of Life is divided into four sections. The first is a general overview of life and its possible origins. Asimov spends a fair amount of time discussing the…
