The field of Artificial life (ALife) is now firmly established in the scientific world, but it has yet to achieve one of its original goals: an understanding of the emergence of life on Earth. The new field of artificial chemistries draws from chemistry, biology, computer science, mathematics, and other disciplines to work toward that goal. For if, as it has been argued, life emerged from pirmitive, prebiotic forms of self-organizations, then studying models of chemical reaction systems could bring ALife closer to understanding the origins of life.

In artificial chemistries (ACs), the emphasis is on creating new interactions rather than new materials. The results can be found in both the virtual world, in certain multiagent systems, and in the physical world, in new (artificial) reaction systems. This book offers an introduction to the fundamental concepts of ACs, covering both theory and practical applications.

After a general overview of the field and its methodology, the book reviews important aspects of biology, including basic mechanisms of evolution; discusses examples of ACs drawn from the literature; considers fundamental questions of how surveys a range of applications, which include computing, systems modeling in biology, and synthetic life. An appendix provides a Python toolkit for implementing ACs. -- from back cover.

Theoretical Models in Biology

Glenn Rowe

Oxford University Press, USA, 1997

This book surveys the state of the art in theoretical and computer modeling for biological sciences. Using both mathematical and stochastic computer models of biological systems, the author focuses in particular on three central topics: the origin of life, the immune system, and memory in the brain. Throughout the…

Astronomical Origins of Life - Steps Towards Panspermia

Fred Hoyle, N. C. Wickramasinghe

Springer, 1999

Two of the pioneers of the modern version of panspermia - the theory that comets disperse microbial life throughout the cosmos - trace the development of their ideas through a sequence of key papers. A logical progression of thought is shown to lead up to the currently accepted viewpoint that at least the biochemical…

Las Fuentes De La Vida

Isaac Asimov

Editorial Limusa S.A. De C.V., 2002

This is the middle of a set of three biochemistry books Asimov wrote in the 1950’s and 1960’s which form a progressive examination of the field. The Wellsprings of Life is divided into four sections. The first is a general overview of life and its possible origins. Asimov spends a fair amount of time discussing the…

The New Science of Astrobiology

J. Chela-Flores

Springer, 2007

Astrobiology is a very broad interdisciplinary field covering the origin, evolution, distribution, and destiny of life in the universe, as well as the design and implementation of missions for solar system exploration. A review covering its complete spectrum has been missing at a level accessible even to the…

The Origin and Early Evolution of Life

Tom Fenchel

Oxford University Press, USA, 2003

Origin and Early Evolution of Life draws on evidence from molecular genetics, the structure and function of extant organisms, and geology. It covers the period from about 4 billion years ago, when life is thought to have originated, to about 600 million years ago when multicellular organisms first arose. There are…
